INTERNATIONAL DIVORCE

International divorce Doesn't Exist

That's right, there's no 'international divorce law'. When you get divorced and you're living abroad, you do that using laws of a country. Which country's or counties' law(s) may apply to you can vary, but there is no international family law that spans countries*.

but there are international divorce lawyers!

There are indeed. What the title really means is that they are willing to work with lawyers outside their country and they possibly are professionally proficient in a different language. They may also have experience working abroad. It is extremely rare that they are qualified to practice more than one country's law. If you come across a lawyer who can do this, you will know straight away, because it will be on their website - it is a major achievement! An international divorce lawyer therefore signals to people like us that they work with foreigners who often have a different set of needs than people who are divorcing whilst living in their home country.

*An important exception

While there is no international family or divorce law, there is a convention about child abduction that applies across at least 97 states. If you have children, is incredibly important you know if it applies to you. Read more here.
